Y1 and Y3 visit the Botanical Gardens

On Wednesday, Bluebirds class visited Birmingham Botanical Gardens.  The weather was perfect! How lucky were we?!

We visited the Arid Glasshouse, the Alpine garden, the Bonsai garden, the Mediterranean Glasshouse, the garden’s oldest tree (200 years!), the Tropical glasshouse, the playground and the main lawn (yes….we had a roll down the hill, just like we did in Year 1!).  We were excited to see the Koi Carp and Miss Knapman had a special visit from a Red Admiral butterfly!  Mrs Parry told the class the flowers and plants she knew the names of and everyone enjoyed smelling the roses.  The best pink one was rated 10/10 by our “sniffers!”  After our picnic lunch sat on the grass we had a quick power nap in the sun for 5 minutes at the most!   At the end, we had a classroom learning session which linked to our Science lessons on plants.  We learnt the parts of a plant and flower, how plants survive and how seeds can be dispersed.  This involved an interactive activity and Lilly was our bee… she was a very busy pollinator!
The children LOVED our trip to the Botanical Gardens! We  had perfect weather for exploring. The children were well behaved and enjoyed the day’s activities; they took part in a growth lesson where they got to discuss, build and label the parts of a flower. They also got to act out the pollination process. Jasmine made a beautiful bee buzzing about the children who were standing proudly as flowers!

The children also enjoyed exploring the gardens and of course we hade time to play in the play areas. On the way back to school we had some very sleepy puffins.

Check out the photos to see what fun we had!
