Year 4 Maths Workshop

A Fantastic Workshop at Bells Farm Primary

Today, our Year 4 families were invited to a brilliant Maths Workshop to share our wonderful work and learn more about our current topic Multiplications.

🧠 Thinking about Maths!

We kicked off by sharing how we teach math’s at Bells Farm, diving into the resources we use like White Rose Maths, Master the Curriculum, and NCETM.

📚 Show & Tell: Maths Book Magic

One of the highlights was our “Quick Chat” moment, where children proudly showed off their maths books to their adults. It was heartwarming to hear them talk about what they’ve learned, what they’re confident in, and even the tricky bits they’re working on. Real learning in action!

🔢 Times Tables: The Key to KS2 Success

We explored the importance of times tables and how they’re the foundation for mastering Key Stage 2 maths. Parents learned about the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) — a speedy online test where children answer 25 questions in just 5 minutes. No pressure, just practice!

🧮 Laws of Multiplication — Made Simple!

Mr Lo broke down the big words into bite-sized ideas.

Commutative Law –> 3 x 5 is the same as 5 x 3

Associative –> we can multiply in any order. For example 2 x 16 x 5 we would do 2×5 = 10 then x 16 = 160!

Distributive Laws –> To work out the 12x table we can use our knowledge of the 2x table and the 10x table. For example 7 x 12 = 2×7 = 14 10 x 7 = 70 add them together (70+14 = 84)

🔍 Investigations & Activities

Children and parents got stuck into some maths investigations — including the mysterious 9 times table story! With booklets in hand, everyone had a go at cracking patterns and solving puzzles.
